McMurtry said, “I am honored to have been chosen to take on additional responsibilities in my role as State Representative and am grateful to Speaker Deleo and Chairman Dempsey for their trust and confidence in me.”

“I’m proud that Rep. Paul McMurtry will serve in the position of Vice Chair of the Committee on Bills in Third Reading,” said House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo. “Since being elected to the Legislature in 2007, Paul has demonstrated his commitment to his constituents and the people of the Commonwealth. This is a well-deserved honor and I look forward to continuing work with Paul this session.”

As one of only three members of the House Committee on Bills in the Third Reading, McMurtry will be tasked to consider all bills prior to their final reading, and examine, correct and recommend such amendments as may be necessary concerning duplication, grammatical errors and constitutionality.  The Committee also considers all amendments received from the Senate, as well as, acts in relation to resolutions and proposals that come before the House.  Third Reading is the final committee before any bill goes to the floor of both branches for full debate in anticipation of passage and the signature of the Governor.

As a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, McMurtry will consider all legislation affecting the finances of the Commonwealth and will immediately begin to work on the FY14 Budget. He will be tasked to address the many challenges that this coming fiscal year promises and will participate in an extensive series of budget hearings that will take place across the Commonwealth in the coming months.

“I am pleased to welcome Representative McMurtry to the House Committee on Ways & Means,” said Representative Brian S. Dempsey, House Chair of the Committee. “He brings with him a wide range of experience in both the public and private sectors. This unique perspective is helpful to all our members as we face the challenges of a difficult fiscal climate.”

McMurtry added, “I look forward to continuing my priority to serve the residents of Dedham, Westwood and Walpole while upholding my sworn oath to the Commonwealth with my new roles and responsibilities.”

Representative McMurtry was first elected to serve the 11th Norfolk District in a special election in May 2007. He previously served as Vice Chairman on the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development; he will also continue to serve on the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Businesses. McMurtry is the owner of the Dedham Community Theatre located in historic Dedham Square.
