Plenty Activities Planned For National Night Out in Dedham

National Night Out offers the opportunity for local law enforcement and citizens to get together for safer neighborhoods by creating awareness about public safety.

Over the weekend, the town kicked off National Night Out for the third year in a row.  Dedham Police is participating in the event along with several civic groups in Dedham to create awareness about public safety.

According to police, there was a high amount of community participation in 2011 and 2012.  And this year there will be even more events for all ages to participate in.

"We are looking to capitalize on the success and positive energy generated by the various groups to make Dedham’s neighborhoods safer," Chief Michael D’Entremont said. “The entire police force is very excited to participate in the planned events, and we are especially looking forward to hosting an open house on Monday, Aug. 5 at the police station to showcase our capabilities and emergency vehicles.”

From now until Aug. 6, the whole community can participate in events that range from a kids police academy to playing softball.

Chairman for the board of selectmen Mike Butler says that he was excited to present a proclamation officially stating Aug. 6 as National Night Out in Dedham.

"This program represents a way to strengthen police-community partnerships, and celebrate all of the great work done by law enforcement," Chairman Butler said. "It’s a special way to show the Dedham Police Department how grateful we are for the security and protection they provide to the community every single day.”

On Saturday the Dedham Square Artist Guild held an art workshop for children.  Kids of all ages were able to draw their favorite super hero and had their work displayed at local businesses.

"All of the civic groups have planned many fun events to kickoff Dedham’s third National Night Out”, Dan Hart, Chairman of Mother Brook Community Group said.  “Most of the events are kid-friendly and family oriented, and all events are free and open to anyone interested in supporting this safety initiative."

Citizens are also being asked to keep their lights on until 11 p.m. on Aug. 6 to show that Dedham is "committed to shining a light for safer neighborhoods."
