NewBridge on the Charles Celebrates Nonagenarians Life & Contributions

51 residents over the age of 90 living at NewBridge on the Charles, the newest Hebrew Senior Life continuing care retirement community in Dedham, were
honored at a Nonagenarian Day celebration at noon on September 11th.

Nonagenarians are people who have reached their tenth decade of life. State Rep. Paul McMurtry and Dedham Town Administrator William Keegan congratulated the nonagenarians and offered them the best wishes of state and local government for continued good health.

The event was organized by NewBridge resident Irving Silverman, 92, who has set a personal goal of living to the age of 120.

Silverman said he learned the secret of longevity from his mother who lived to be 101 years of age.

“She told me to be kind-hearted, a good husband and father and especially to be philanthropic,” said Silverman, a three-year resident of NewBridge. “I have followed this mantra all of my life, adding my own secret, the decision to be
optimistic, and to concentrate on the pluses of my life rather than the minuses.”

Silverman continued that “Living at NewBridge has enabled me to exercise my body, exercise my healthy food intake and most of all to exercise my mind, stimulating me to think positively. I have a passionate mission to further the acknowledgement of all nonagenarians who aspire to living longer, healthier and happier lives.”

The 90 and older population nearly tripled in the United States over the past three decades to reach 1.9 million in 2010. The 90 and older population is expected to quadruple by 2050, according to the US Census Bureau.
