Nobles Day Campers Raise over a Thousand Dollars in Pennies for Dana-Farber

The Nobles Day Counselors in Training group created a fundraiser that raised $1461.15 in pennies for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in just two weeks.

At Nobles Day Camp the Counselors-in-Training are made up of high school students who are required to fulfill some kind of service project for the program.

Since there were two members of the camp staff who were battling cancer, the teens wanted to create a fundraiser that would benefit cancer research.  For camp staffer Bill Wallace, he was very pleased with their choice.

"Giving to Dana-Farber seemed to be the perfect decision," Wallace said.  "And it's nice to see the kids do something like this with very little guidance."

The campers decided to create a penny fundraiser, but they wanted to make a competition out of it to help raise around $300.

The teens had no idea that there simple idea would make such a big difference.

For two weeks it was counselors vs. campers to see who can collect the most pennies.  The campers won, but they were surprised to learn that collectively the camp was able to raise $1461.15 for Dana-Farber.

"I'm so proud with the work they did," Camp Assistant Director Clair Trainor said. "They were able to raise three times what they thought they would receive."

Tori Deberardinis is one of the counselors in training and was very surprised with the outcome.

"Especially with the little kids," she said. "But they really made an effort to bring in the money."
