Calling all Creative Kids!

Thanks for checking out our new Blue Bunny Bookstore blog, and thanks, Dedham Patch, for sharing your audience with us.  Look for a new blog entry every Friday to find out what’s happening at the store, and learn about newly-published books, author events, and store projects!

For our first blog post here, I want to share one of our very favorite endeavors, our kids’ creativity magazine, HUTCH.  Besides our retail operation, we spend a lot of time encouraging kids to read, write, draw, and be creative.  We published our first semi-annual issue of HUTCH in December 2008, and ten issues later, we are going strong and accepting submissions for our 11th issue now.  The Blue Bunny invites kids ages 5-12 to send us art, poetry, stories, book reviews, photos, and other journalistic pieces for consideration in our next issue.  The magazine is published in a high-gloss professionally printed format, and is also available as a online download.

Our favorite part of the whole process?  Our publication staff party to celebrate each new issue with all the kids who have contributed.  Every child whose submission is accepted is invited to our party where they receive a free copy of the magazine, a certificate, an inspiring address by Peter H. Reynolds, refreshments and lots of good company!  Speaking of Peter H. Reynolds, the magazine is designed and illustrated directly by Peter, so needless to say, it is beautiful and very creative!  

Why do we love this magazine so much?  We love giving kids a chance to see themselves in print, fostering their sense of identity as a writer or an artist, and seeing them sharing their pride with their families and friends.  We believe all kids need a chance to shine, and these creative kids are superstars in our eyes.
