Do you ever stand back and look at us, Carol? No one is going to take us (U.S.) seriously if we try to teach anyone anything. IMO, we have lost our standing on the world stage. All we've got left is brute force. And that's not going to last and it is nothing to be proud of. .

I sometimes wished for a "prudish" mother. When all my female classmates were wearing slacks, I could not leave the house in anything more than a skirt and blouse or dress. Leotards were ok, though. Go figure.

I see nothing wrong with a religion with rules, as long as as an individual is free to leave the religion and the rules do not expect members to break the law.
I see nothing wrong with a religion that treasures their women enough to expect modesty. American men hate that. American men don't want THEIR rights to leer at women infringed upon. Another reason we are hated.Many religions have requirements for men, as well. I watched a program the other day that explained the significance of the turban in Sikh religion.
Personally, on a bad hair day or when I am "feeling fat", there is nothing I would like better than to throw a veil over my hair and an extra layer of clothing;) -

ReplyI was just finished reading the Sun Chronicle's editorial "Good start to keep smoke away from children". Where do I begin?
1) Possibility of another $1.00 per pack tax? Who ever votes for that should be ashamed.
2) Secondhand smoke is harmful to young children. Agreed. The proposed law does not prevent adults from smoking in cars when children are absent. Only when they are present. So the secondhand smoke theoretically will still linger and be a danger to young children. And Ms. Schaffer will still smell it on the students..
3) The law would only apply to vehicles that are transporting children in car seats. Talk about unintended consequences! Is it possible that the same numb skulls who smoke around their children might stop using a car seat to avoid detection? We are not dealing with Einsteins here.
4) A constitutional issue? The car is treated as an extension of the home? Not buying it. I can have as many open containers of alcohol in my home as I choose. Not in my car when it is on a public highway. And this is only one example of things I can do in my home and not on public highways, or public parks or public beaches, whether I am driving or not.
Finally, I think the 16% of adults who smoke should have at least enough willpower to get from point A to point B without a nicotine fix. If not, maybe a total ban would make smoking so inconvenient that Massachusetts will have the highest rate of NON-smokers in the country! Yippee!!!

Can we start with banning smoking wherever we can? It is a no brainer, IMHO. Even the surgeon general would agree.

For clarification:: I don't see HOW banning smoking in any public venue is an infringement on civil liberties.

I don't know why the government concluded Fort Hood was "work place violence".
One thing I am pretty sure of is that after 9/11, insurance companies worked their "magic" and determined acts of terror were not covered.
Have the powers that be concluded that the Boston attack was an "act of terror" in the legal sense? If so, there may be many businesses who might be without recourse.
