Avoid a Roof Collapse: Clear Snow From Your Rooftop

Light, fluffy snow on rooftops can act as a sponge for rain, which is in the forecast for Monday. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency offers these tips.

While temperatures dropped overnight on Friday resulting in light, fluffy snow, he Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) warns that fluffy snow piled high on roofs can act as a sponge, absorbing rain and adding additional stress to structures. State Issues Advisory on Potential Roof Collapses

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency urges residents to learn the danger signs of roof collapse and to clear roofs safely.

Over the past few days, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has received reports of more than 70 roof collapses or buildings that have sustained potential structural damage from the weight of snow and ice loads on roofs. While these incidents have occurred throughout the Commonwealth, the majority have taken place in eastern Massachusetts. Click the photo gallery to the right for image of recent roof collapses throughout the region.
