Due to the expected winter storm on Tuesday, the state announced that the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25.
Since much of Massachusetts is expecting a winter storm on Tuesday, and with it the possibility of numerous school closings or delayed openings, the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced on its website. Originally this composition test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, but in an effort to make sure all schools administer the test on the same day, "all schools must administer the ELA Composition test to students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on Monday, March 25, including schools that are not affected by the weather," according to a memo from Elizabeth Davis, Associate Commissioner …

Anywhere from 3-5 inches of snow could fall in the area; a Winter Storm Watch is now in effect.
Another winter storm is headed this way. Unlike the blizzard of 2013, though, this incoming storm is expected to bring only upwards of 3-5 inches of the white stuff. This storm will comprise a mix of wind, rain wet snow, the accumulations of which will take place mostly along and outside I-95 Thursday, according to WHDH. Moreover, it will take some time to reach the predicted snow accumulation, WHDH Meteorologist Jeremy Reiner wrote in his blog Wednesday: Tomorrow and into early Friday morning will be the brunt of the storm but I have to tell you---it won't behave like a classic winter storm where we get slammed with snow for 6-8 hours then we're done. It will be a slow, drawn out storm where it snows lightly (sometimes steadily) for …

Stores like Panera Bread on Providence Highway are closing shop. But it's not just because of the storm, it's also due to the vehicle ban that was issued earlier today.
Not all meteorologists accept the name game, or acknowledge this storm as Nemo.
You've probably heard occasional—but perhaps not frequent—references to this winter storm as "Nemo." While it makes for some good jokes about that cute little orange fish, Nemo is not the brainchild of the Disney Corporation, but rather, a pre-determined name The Weather Channel gave to this latest storm. If you missed it: The Weather Channel in November announced it would name "noteworthy winter storms" in the 2012-2013 winter season. Sure, snowstorms have been informally named after the fact (remember Snowtober?) This is the first season, however, that The Weather Channel is naming them as it does hurricanes and tropical storms. The rationale? According to the Weather Channel, names raise awareness, make it easier to follow a weather …
Town Administrator Bill Keegan issued a code red message Thursday night discussing the plans for the town.
Town Administrator Bill Keegan met with local officials Thursday afternoon to discuss plans and strategies for the town during the winter storm. "During that time heavy amounts of snow and possible power outages are expected. The Dedham Emergency Management Personnel will be working around the clock to address community needs," Keegan said in a statement. "We ask for your patience and cooperation as our crews work to clear streets, sidewalks and parking lots and respond to emergency calls for service." Keegan asked residents to call NSTAR directly if there is a power outage. And to call the Dedham Dispatch Center if there are any trees blocking the road or "resting on power lines." The town will not open a shelter at this time. "The …

Patch stopped by Shaw's Star Market on Providence Highway to ask residents how they were preparing for the blizzard.
The National Weather Service is calling this a "potential historic storm" for the Dedham area, and already residents are heading to the supermarkets to stock up on items. So we decided to ask a few residents how they were preparing for the storm. How are you preparing for the blizzard? Tell us in the comments section below.
We could see more than two feet of snow.
If you've been talking about what a calm winter we've had, you've spoken too soon. Just a couple days after the 35th anniversary of the Blizzard of '78, New England is expected to get a blizzard this weekend. Norfolk County could see more than 2 feet of snow, the largest snow accumulation since 2010. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch for most of eastern Massachusetts including Dedham, calling it a "potential historic winter storm." We could see snow falling at 3-to-4 inches per hour and wind gusts of more thsan 20 miles per hour. The National Weather Service is warning that "white out conditions will be possible..making travel very dangerous." And they are asking residents to be prepared to alter any travel plans…

Forecasters are warning the timing of an approaching snowstorm may make Monday afternoon and evening commute slippery.
There may be an inch of snow on the ground on Monday evening during the evening commute, according to forecasters at WHDH-TV. "Don't expect a ton of snow, but a general 1-3" falls late Monday afternoon, through the evening, producing slick roads, perhaps in time for the ride home from work," writes meterologist Chris Lambert in his blog. Even though not much snow will fall, Lambert said that the snow "will create slick spots on the roads Monday evening and Monday night." The National Weather Service forecasts that the snow will start between 3-5 p.m. in Hamilton and Wenham The precipitation will change over to sleet later in the evening. Based on the forecast, the weather service has issued a winter weather advisory that runs from 1 p.m…

The National Weather Service is predicting low temperatures in the single digits.
A snowy start to the week could herald more wintery conditions for Dedham, according to the National Weather Service. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 7 a.m. Tuesday, with a chance of snow predicted through 10 a.m. Slick roadways and poor visibility are possible, as well as blowing and drifting of snow due to the wind and the light nature of the precipitation. The Tuesday morning rush hour is expected to be impacted across New England. Tuesday night through Thursday are predicted to be clear, but with temperatures between 1 and 18 degrees. A chance of snow is predicted again for Friday and Saturday, with limited accumulation. According to the Center for Disease Control: When winter temperatures drop significantly below normal…

I would love to disagree, but I just can not. Elmview Place, which is the exit to the gym of the High School got one pass. Not only that, they stopped before the end of the street and just went into the school parking lot. Missed the bottom half of the street and left the end house snowed in. Saw four plows go by the street with the blade up. Just saw the Custodians taking snow from the parking …   more ›
