“Whether it's peacetime or wartime, it's always important that we remember – Veteran's Day means more than just a day off from school.” These were the words that opened Principal Holli Armstrong's Oakdale Elementary School Veterans Day assembly. All week at school, time was put aside to teach our “young ones” the importance of Veterans Day. Originally celebrated in 1919, to honor those who served, sacrificed, and survived World War 1, Veteran's Day (Armistice Day) has grown and evolved over the years. It was in 1978, that a bill was signed, assuring the nation that each year on Nov. 11, the day would be set aside to honor and thank all veterans who served our country. Over 600 people attended to thank and honor the men and women who served our country.
Coming from a military family herself, Dedham Middle School Principal, Debra Gately, announced to the full house in her auditorium, that “this assembly (in celebration of Veterans Day) was a time-honored tradition here at the school…” The hour long event certainly had it's share of pomp and circumstance, including a roomful of local dignitaries and honored guests. Spotted in the crowd, alongside her 600 plus students, was State Senator Mike Rush (D-West Roxbury), himself a veteran of the United States Navy – Dedham's Superintendent of Schools, June Doe – Asst. Superintendent, Cynthia Kelly – Town Administrator, William Keegan – Police Chief, Michael D'Entremont – Dedham's Veterans Service Officer, Bill Aitken – and a host of others. …
Students were able to write letters to our service men and women.

Operation Gratitude is a non-profit organization that sends thousands of care packages, entertainment items, and personal letters to U.S. Service Members. On Veteran's Day the fourth grade class at the Avery School participated in this initiative by writing letters to the service men and women who are serving our country.

Pizzas, Flags and Family to say “Thank You.”
UNO Chicago Grill in Dedham will take time out on Nov. 12th to say “Thank You” to our veterans, by serving individual deep-dish pizzas and bringing flags to patients staying in the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. This will be the fifth consecutive year that UNO Dedham has brought pizzas and flags to the VA Hospital on Veteran’s Day.
