Stamp Prices to Rise One Cent This Month

U.S. Postal Service rates are set to change on Jan. 27.

The cost to mail a letter will rise slightly later this month when postal-rate changes go into effect, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Stamp prices will increase one cent, from 45 cents to 46 cents, to mail one-ounce letters, effective Jan. 27. The cost for letters weighing more than one ounce will stay the same, at 20 cents for each additional ounce, an announcement from the postal service says. The post office 280 Bussey St. is among 43 in Massachusetts the postal service plans to study to determine the "customer needs," the statement, released Tuesday, said. The postal service currently operates 32,000 offices around the country, and the need to keep them all open has diminished as more people use places like pharmacies, grocery stores and the internet to make postal purchases. “Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business,” said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe in a written statement. A total of 3,700 post …
