Stop & Shop Prepares for Potential Labor Strike, Hires Replacement Workers

The company is holding discussions with labor representatives as the deadline for a three-year contract nears on Feb. 23.

Representatives of the Stop & Shop grocery store chain are looking to hire temporary replacement workers as it prepares for a potential labor strike, according to a report in the Boston Herald Friday.  The Quincy-based company is currently holding contract discussions with United Food and Commercial Workers Union locals who represent more than 40,000 Stop & Shop employees in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, according to the Herald. Have you had a near-accident or accident trying to drive near the station? What solutions do you have for the traffic flow problem? Let us know in the comment section below.

Stop & Shop fuel station threatened to be shut down by the Dedham Planning Board.

Dozens of near-accidents, traffic back-ups and no plans on the horizon have the Stop & Shop gas station on the brink of being shut down by the Dedham Planning Board, members said at a meeting last week. Joseph Penny, director of development for the grocery store, said he has had meetings with town consultants on how to curtail traffic at the Providence Highway site, but they had not come up with plans as of yet. The Planning Board last met with Penny three months ago and had requested that his company find a solution for what often are long lines that block traffic. “Someone is gonna get killed there,” board member Ralph Steeves said. “If it’s not working the way it’s supposed to we’re gonna shut it down.” The popular gas station has eight…
