TELL US: Would You Upgrade to a Metal Starbucks Card for $450?

In partnership with Gilt, Starbucks is now offering 5,000 specialized rewards cards, etched in steel, for $450 each.

For residents in the Commonwealth who prefer Starbucks coffee above all other blends, a new offer for a holiday gift idea is now on the table. Starbucks announced this week that it has made available a limited-edition super premium rewards card for My Starbucks Rewards members, one that is etched in steel.  Unlike the shop's traditional rewards card that enables users to buy various products, the new card, which costs $50 to make, would be loaded with $400, according to USAToday.  Interested members can choose to buy one of the 5,000 available cards on gilt.com/starbucksultimate. The cards will automatically be enrolled in the "gold tier" of Starbucks' loyalty rewards program, according to a Mashable.com report. That will allow consumers …

Starbucks Owes Mass Baristas More Than $14 Million

A US Court of Appeals panel upheld a lower court ruling saying that a company policy violated state laws.

Starbucks owes baristas across Massachusetts more than $14 million for “violating state laws preventing supervisors from sharing in tips pools,” The Boston Globe reported. A US Court of Appeals panel upheld a lower court ruling on the issue in which “Starbucks baristas challenged the Seattle coffee chain’s practice of requiring them to share tips with shift supervisors, according to a class-action lawsuit filed in 2008,” reported The Globe. The ruling reportedly affects about 11,000 baristas who worked in Starbucks between 2005 and 2001.

POLL: Will Starbucks' Price Hike Change Your Coffee-Drinking Habits?

Prices reportedly will increase only on some drinks. And only in certain parts of the country.

My tall, black extra-bold coffee is going to cost me 10-cents more. Word from the Seattle-based coffee company today is that prices will increase 1 percent. The AP quotes a company spokesman as saying higher costs are the reason. That same story says the last across-the-board price increase was in 2007. But only some drinks will be pricier — apparently the next size up, 'grande,' or  medium — remains unchanged. And the higher prices are taking effect only in the Northeast — including the Boston area — and the Southwest. Florida, California and the Midwest apparently had their prices raised in the fall.
