Dedham's DPW Ready For Snow Storm This Weekend

The Department of Public Works has been preparing for the storm since Monday.

According to The National Weather Service, they are expecting that we'll have heavy wet snow through the weekend.  But Dedham's Department of Public Works believes that they are more prepared due to the timing of the storm. "We have been preparing for the storm since Monday," Joseph Flanagan, Director of Pubic Works said. "We prepare for all storms but there was more [preparation] because the timing of the storm." The town increased its Snow & Ice budget by $200,000, according to the department. And they are expected to use a little more than $150,000 into this weekend. "There are also other charges such as salt, sand, fuel, equipment, plowing, removal, etc...that are charged to the snow and ice budget," Flanagan said. After the Blizzard…

Possible Big Snowstorm This Weekend

Dedham could see up to a foot of snow.

Once again, the snow is melting. But, once again, don't put the shovels away. Because, once again, the weekend is bringing us more snow. A new snowstorm is headed our way for Saturday and Sunday, and Canton could see nearly a foot of the white stuff before it's done. On his blog, WHDH meteorologist Pete Bouchard is calling for light rain along the coast Saturday with snow inland and snow everywhere by Sunday morning. There may also be some coastal flooding. "Heavy snow through early morning Sunday. Roads will be tough to travel, and yes, your flight will most likely be delayed or cancelled. (Although I don't run an airline, so I'll let them have the final word.)," Bouchard wrote. As of now, forecasts call for 4 to 8 inches of snow in …

I would love to disagree, but I just can not. Elmview Place, which is the exit to the gym of the High School got one pass. Not only that, they stopped before the end of the street and just went into the school parking lot. Missed the bottom half of the street and left the end house snowed in. Saw four plows go by the street with the blade up. Just saw the Custodians taking snow from the parking …   more ›

A Race Against Time, Shops Close for Blizzard and Vehicle Ban

Stores like Panera Bread on Providence Highway are closing shop.  But it's not just because of the storm, it's also due to the vehicle ban that was issued earlier today.

Travel Ban Lifted Statewide as of 4 PM

MEMA announced the decision on its Facebook page.

The statewide driving ban will be lifted as of 4 p.m., the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency posted on its Facebook page. The driving ban was lifted at 1 p.m. for Nantucket and for all communities west of I-91. Residents across the entire state are free to drive after 4.  MEMA officials had asked community members to stop calling 911 and their local public safety departments about this topic.

Why Do Snowstorms Have Names Now?

Not all meteorologists accept the name game, or acknowledge this storm as Nemo.

You've probably heard occasional—but perhaps not frequent—references to this winter storm as "Nemo." While it makes for some good jokes about that cute little orange fish, Nemo is not the brainchild of the Disney Corporation, but rather, a pre-determined name The Weather Channel gave to this latest storm. If you missed it: The Weather Channel in November announced it would name "noteworthy winter storms" in the 2012-2013 winter season. Sure, snowstorms have been informally named after the fact (remember Snowtober?) This is the first season, however, that The Weather Channel is naming them as it does hurricanes and tropical storms. The rationale? According to the Weather Channel, names raise awareness, make it easier to follow a weather …
