A Dedham man was charged with an OUI after almost hitting a cruiser and a disabled motorist on Route 128.
On Sunday around 9:25 p.m., State Police charged Keith Thomas, 28, of Dedham for an OUI along with several other charges. According to police reports, Thomas nearly struck a cruiser and a disabled motorist on Route 128 by five feet. While another cruiser attended the disabled motorist, Trooper Barry began to follow the SUV and observed it exit off of the highway at Exit 15B and was able to pull over the vehicle. "Trooper Barry approached the SUV and could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, observed the operator to have bloodshot,glassy eyes and was slurring his words as he answered the troopers questions," police said. MassDOT and the Massachusetts State Police are reminding drivers traveling along I-93 and I-95 (Rte. 128) that use of the breakdown lane on I-93/I-95 (Rte. 128) has been discontinued in the area where the new fourth travel lane has opened. In late November, MassDOT opened a section of the new fourth travel lane along I-93 and I-95 (Rte. 128) between Route 24 in Randolph and a point just south of Rte. 109 near the Westwood-Dedham line. Part of the southbound travel lane will be split after Friday, MassDot says.
Starting on Friday night, the Mass Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is splitting Route 128 to continue widening bridges across the Charles River. Jan 18 will end with a traffic split formed along Route 128 southbound near the Great Plain Avenue intersection, according to a press release from MassDOT. Two lanes will shift to the left, two to the right, around areas where construction crews will be working. Some delays are expected between 7 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday, while the lane split is installed. The trooper was taken to the hospital and has been released. A Needham resident has been charged as a result of the incident.
UPDATED (11:30 a.m.) - Massachusetts State Police arrested a Needham resident after her vehicle struck a State Trooper on Rte. 128 in Dedham Thursday night. The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. Thursday, when the trooper's vehicle was struck north of Rte. 109 in Dedham. "The trooper was inside his marked State Police cruiser and in the process of taking the road construction set up down when was his cruiser was struck in the left rear quarter by a passing SUV causing severe damage to the cruiser," Massachusetts State Police Lt.
