Dedham Square Leaders Urge Patronage During Project

Board members addressed the public during the group's annual meeting Monday evening.

Dedham Square Circle leaders are looking to a 2012 with plenty of excitement as a $6 million-plus project gets underway, but reminded supporters Monday evening that businesses in the Square will need plenty of patronage. The Dedham Square Improvement Project will cause detours through the Square, construction workers will tear up sidewalks in front of businesses and parking will be limited, but DSC leaders stressed shoppers must recognize that now is the time to support the Square. "There's no doubt about it, it's going to be slightly inconvenient from time to time, but we have to think to the future," said Susie McIntosh, DSC president. "Please patronize our merchants, even if it is hard to get to." DSC and Town Hall are working …

Artful Bunnies to Benefit Proposed Dedham Art Center

Artists will help raise money for the new center with 20 painted rabbit sculptures.

The arts will be hopping this spring – all around Dedham. Modeled after nearly 300 successful public art projects around the country, the Dedham Public Art Project has been unveiled this month, which will result in 20 artist-painted fiberglass rabbit sculptures placed across town in high-visibility locations starting in spring 2012. Each 5-foot-high rabbit will be painted by a juried selection of local artists – and each sponsored by local businesses, individuals and organizations. At the conclusion of the public display over several months, the completed sculptures will be auctioned off to support the proposed Mother Brook Arts & Community Center being considered as a new use for the current Avery Elementary School. As part of the project…

Library Director Leaves, Dedham Author Celebrated Globally

Looking back at this week's top stories.

Patricia Lambert has left her post as director of the Dedham Public Library after seven years of service. She left abruptly from a trustees meeting on Monday. Staff member Lisa Ingemi has been elevated to the position of acting director until the board can find a permanent director. At a Sustainability Committee meeting Monday, members discussed their support to apply for grant to study constructing a pedestrian rail trail in Dedham. What do you think of the idea? Over the weekend, Dedham celebrated its 375th anniversary in grand style at the Endicott Estate. The event brought well over 6,000 people out to enjoy a day of dancing, food and games. A ceremony honoring men and women who have served in the armed forces was held at the start of …

'Connected Dots': Iowa Teacher's Idea Inspires Thousands, Celebrates Reynolds' Book

The fourth annual International Dot Day celebrated "The Dot," a kids book by Dedham author/illustrator Peter Reynolds.

Thirteen thousand six hundred children from Traer, Iowa to Dedham Square to Australia collaborated to honor International Dot Day  - a celebration of a child’s creativity in the classroom and the world-renowned book The Dot, by Dedham author Peter Reynolds. The worldwide effort to tap into a child’s imagination and creative side didn’t start with Reynolds though – or even in Dedham. It started in a small Iowa K-12 school of roughly 500 students 85 miles northeast of Des Moines. “I was so inspired by Peter’s book. It sends such a great message that kids need to hear – to make your mark,” said North Tama County Community School teacher Terry Shay, who initiated the day four years ago. The Dot inspires kids to start with nothing – a blank …

Kids' Comedy Night Serves Up Laughs in Dedham

Event offers children and adults the chance to make jokes while raising funds for a Pan Mass Challenge team.

At least 20 local residents battled the heat as they visited the Blue Bunny Books and Toys in Dedham Square on Friday night. They were able to "grin and bear it." The Blue Bunny and local nonprofit Catching Joy hosted a Kids' Comedy Night, an event providing local children and adults the opportunity to share laughs, jokes and magic with their peers.  "We hope we can bring laughter to people who can use it," Catching Joy founder and executive director Joy Surprenant said.  Catching Joy promotes teaching hands-on activities for children and adults to help them understand the joy of giving. Friday's event allowed the nonprofit to spread its message while helping raise money for Team Chuckle, a Pan Mass Challenge team featuring Boston-based …
