Dedham's girls basketball team beat Hanover Tuesday night 58-54.
The Dedham girls basketball team exploited its height advantage over Hanover in the second half of Tuesday's MIAA preliminary playoff game and used it to beat the Indians to the glass for easy put-backs en route to a 58-54 win. "They're not that big, we just came out slow. In the second, we just picked it up," said sophomore Ellen Masalsky. Masalsky led the charge on the offensive boards and often found herself open under the hoop. She scored a dozen points in the second half and finished with 17. "I just drove from the outside, which I normally don't do, and just worked really hard," Masalsky said. With the Indians' defense spread thin, Dedham fed Masalsky and Mary-Kate Sullivan several times throughout the second half, and they both …

Dedham boys hockey beaten 7-1 by neighboring Needham.
After opening its season with a dramatic season-opening win over Newton South last Saturday, the Dedham boys' ice hockey team suffered a reality check against Bay State Conference Carey Division powerhouse Needham Wednesday night at Babson College, falling 7-1 to the Rockets. Dedham kept the game competitive through the first period before Needham took control with four second-period scores. "The first 10 minutes I was thrilled with the way we played," said Dedham coach Paul Podolski. "We got the puck behind their defensmen, we got pretty good pressure with our first guy and we were able to counter-attack their quick attack and we reacted well on the forecheck." Marauder captain Macon Walker scored Dedham's lone goal in the first period …

The Marauders opened up their 2010-11 season with a tie Wednesday night.
The Dedham and Needham girls' hockey teams penned a new chapter in their legendary Bay State Conference rivalry when they battled to a 1-1 tie Wednesday night at Nobles. Dedham freshman Colleen Downing lit the lamp for the Marauders (0-0-1) at the 5:11 mark of the second period on a deflection. Junior Emily McKenna took the puck across center ice and found senior Meaghan Dwan who blasted a shot on net that was redirected by Downing, who waited on the doorstep for the tip-in. "I got the puck from the point and just shot it on net and it went in. We played really well tonight," Downing said. "Our backchecking was good and we just kept trying to get shots on net." Trailing 1-0, the Rockets (0-1-1) picked up their intensity and delivered a …

With primary elections in the past, winning candidates back on the trail for November election.
It was a big week for several politicians as they faced voters on Tuesday to see who would move on to the general election in November. While Dedham town clerk Paul Munchbach thought voter turnout would be the usual 30 percent, actual numbers said it was closer to 25 percent. In the state Senate race, it was Michael Rush from West Roxbury who beat out Michael Walsh for the Democratic nod. Rush will now face Brad Williams in November. In the congressional primaries, incumbent Stephen Lynch, a Democrat, will face Vernon Harrison in November after Lynch defeated challenger Mac D'Alessandro. For Norfolk County district attorney, current state Sen. Michael Morrissey (D-Quincy) beat out two challengers in the Democratic primary. There wasn't a …

Dedham pounded home six goals Monday afternoon against Boston Latin Academy from five different goal scorers.
Jenna Savi hit the crossbar once, had a shot sail just over the crossbar and a couple more stopped by the goalie - oh, and she had a pair of goals. All within the first 10 minutes of the game. That's how Monday afternoon went for the Dedham girls soccer squad against Boston Latin Academy. They raced out to a 3-0 lead with the pair of scores from Suvi, and a beautiful header off a corner by Kayla Sharpe, the team's first goal of the match. The quick start gave coach Don Savi an ability to rest his starters for a busy week - they play Weymouth Tuesday and Norwood on Thursday. "It was nice to get a quick lead, we could play everybody a lot," coach Savi said. Both goals by junior Jenna Savi came off breakaways that left her alone with BLA …

Construction of a new athletic complex and Avery School will move field hockey and football home games to alternate sites.
A high school senior marks his year by monumental and remember-for-life events: prom, SATs, choosing a college, graduation, Turkey Day football and homecoming. But for senior football and field hockey players, homecoming just won't be the same as both teams will see home games moved away from Dedham High School during construction of a new athletic complex and the new Avery School. "I was immediately disappointed that we wouldn't be allowed to play our entire year at home," said Carmen DelloIacono III, a senior tight end. The Dedham football team will play Saturday afternoons at Westwood High School, and the field hockey squad will ahead to Noble and Greenough to play home contests. "I didn't think it be good for our team to play all our …

Marauders leave for five-day camp in Maine on Friday.
The Dedham High School football squad kicked off the 2010 campaign Monday morning with the first preseason practice of the year for upperclassmen at 9 a.m. at Dedham High School's Veterans Field. The practice was the first of three days of non-contact, helmet's-only conditioning that conclude this morning as freshman - and contact - join the action on Thursday. The rest of the fall sport offerings at Dedham High School begin their respective seasons on Thursday with their first official practices of the fall. While most local football teams will be taking on other local talent in scrimmages this weekend, Dedham will be in Vacationland, though not for vacation as Dedham leaves for a five-day football camp in Maine at 10 a.m. Friday morning…
