Count Us In: Dedham Food Pantry

You can count on the Dedham Food Pantry to serve families in need.

There are many organizations that exist to help feed families in need.  But there is one organization that does this while not receiving any government funding and does not have any paid employees.  The Dedham Food Pantry believes that there is only one purpose, and that is to provide healthy food for those in need. "One thing that we have a lot of now is perishable foods," Vice President of the pantry, Lindsay Barich said. "You can't just have canned foods all the time." The organizers believe that it's important for families in need to receive items like eggs, milk, meat, and vegetables.  But getting the food is becoming more of a challenge. "Our biggest problem is picking up the food," Barich said. "I have my own transportation …

Tales of a Tireless Mom

Tales of a Tireless Mom #98: For Nathan

Learning a lesson about changing the world from a Stoughton grandmother and a 7-year old girl.

“Think Globally, Act Locally.” We’ve all heard this statement and probably even said it ourselves, but have you ever stopped to think about just exactly what it means? It’s saying that in order to change the world you have to start somewhere . . . and that somewhere may as well be your own backyard. Because of the big heart of my 7-year-old daughter Georgia, I learned this lesson firsthand. Jean Fox is a friend of a friend and lives in nearby Stoughton. When her grandson Nathan was born three years ago to a heroin-addicted mother, Jean knew what she had to do. She immediately filed for emergency guardianship to keep Nathan out of the Foster Care system and since that day has given everything to this little boy. Once an extremely sick baby…

Oakdale Elementary Helps Families in Need

Every year the school helps local families in need before Thanksgiving.

This is Principal Holli Armstrong's eighth year at the Oakdale Elementary School in Dedham. This is also the eighth year that Ms. Armstrong has led her students on a successful Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Each year, with the help of school nurse, Sue Healy, local families in need are lined up before Thanksgiving. During the month of November, with her Fifth Grade student council by her side, meetings are held, flyers are made and sent home, and food is collected in each classroom. As the holiday approaches, all of the donated items are brought together, and each year, local supermarkets Roche Bros. and Shaw's, have generously donated Thanksgiving turkeys and gift cards.  We stopped by the school recently after lunch break, to find the …

Count Us In: Shultz's Guest House

When it comes to rescuing dogs, you can count on the Schultz's Guest House.

Patch is starting a new initiative to showcase Dedham residents who are giving back to the community.  And this week we picked Shultz's Guest House as one of the prime examples. Shultz's Guest House was created out of the love for dogs and the need to save the ones that are mistreated. Annie Cole, one of the staff for the shelter describes the facility as a "Disneyland for dogs." Not only are they able to run around on a 200 acre property, but they are able to feel safe.  "What people don't know is that when we rescue these dogs, their spirits are intact.  They're just desperate for attention," she said. The shelter works with other organizations, along with kill shelters across the country to help save as many dogs as they can. Once the…
