Blue Hills Regional Graduates 188 Students [VIDEO]

View the video clips and photos from Blue Hills Class of 2011 Commencement.

Maybe it was the 8:00 p.m. Bruins game that kept the ceremony brief, but the Blue Hills Regional Technical High School graduation ceremony ended in less than an hour Wednesday evening. With 188 graduates, the ceremony was quick and celebratory. Gathered on the football field in the evening sunshine, students, families and supporters filled every seat on the bleacher, the folding chairs and sat on the grass surrounding the field to catch a glimpse of the graduating Class of 2011. Superintendent/Director James Quaglia gave opening remarks and District School Committee Chairman Francis Fistori gave the welcoming address.  The graduates looked on wearing their blue and white caps and gowns, with flip flops and sunglasses to match. Quaglia told…

Question of the Day: Rain Date in Order for Graduation?

Tell us your opinion in the comments.

Dedham High School seniors had an unusual graduation last week in the first ceremony that was altered significantly by thunder, lightning, rain and threat of tornadoes. In an effort to give seniors a more traditional graduation, school officials held a second ceremony on Monday. At that ceremony, superintendent June Doe said she wished she had canceled the June 1 ceremony.  Should the graduation policy include a rain date in the future, and under what circumstances should it be utilized?

Wouldn't it make sense to have a rain date in place? The weather channels had been forcasting violent storms all day. The graduation should have been called off by noon. Also, most towns now have graduations on Sunday afternoons. That would be so much easier for parents. They could enjoy the whole day instead of worrying about getting home from work on a weekday to try to get to graduation. When …   more ›

Two Times the 'Ones': Dedham Grads Do It Again [VIDEO]

The class of 2011 finally had their chance to toss hats high up in the air Monday night at a second ceremony.

Dedham High School graduates finally had the chance to toss their caps high into the night's sky Monday evening - five days after first donning them.  Rain, lightning and thunder caused families and graduates to scrabble into a cramped Endicott Estate on Wednesday, and school officials to hurried through handing out diplomas.  "Obviously the ceremony we had hoped to deliver was a failure. I failed to make a decision to cancel the celebration, and I should've done so at noon," school superintendent June Doe said in a five-minute opening speech. "It is a decision that I regret and I accept full responsibility for not acting on my instinct to make that call." But on Monday, camera-wiedling families were given the opportunity to do what they …

5 Dedham Seniors Receive Diplomas From Ursuline Academy

Ursuline Academy graduates 63 seniors at Sunday afternoon ceremony.

Even "Waldo" made an appearance at this year's Ursuline Academy graduation. Ursuline senior Anna Dolan alluded to the popular children's series "Where's Waldo?" during her valedictory speech. "Though there were many imposters, there was only one Waldo," Dolan said. "Waldo reminds me of the Ursuline girl." Sixty-three Ursuline students accepted their high school diplomas during Sunday's graduation ceremony. Five Dedham residents finished their Ursuline careers as well: Katherine Kenney, Caroline Slason, Alyssa Tavalone, Sylvia Sarkis and Deirdre McLaughlin. Each Dedham student graduated as National Honor Society members. Senior Katherine Dennis delivered the ceremony's salutatory address. Dennis said her time at Ursuline shaped the person …

9 Seniors From Dedham Graduate from Nobles

Nobles students received their diplomas at a ceremony Friday morning.

"Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone?" Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" echoed through the Noble and Greenough School's auditorium as members of the senior class performed the 1970 hit on stage. The senior celebrated assembly for the last time Friday, but carried their enthusiasm and energy into the school's graduation ceremony.  School Life Council President Thomas Kelly kicked off the ceremony as he compared the seniors' high school experience to Huckleberry Finn's journey in Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Kelly, a Dedham resident, encouraged his classmates to band together as they prepare to face new challenges. "We hope to prove ourselves as some of the best and brightest …

Second Ceremony Scheduled to Honor DHS Graduates

The school will host a second ceremony on Monday, June 6.

Following an altered ceremony at the Endicott Estate Wednesday evening that forced Dedham school officials to call an audible on graduation, administrators announced Thursday that they will have a second go at it on Monday, June 6 - this time indoors. Graduates from the class of 2011 and their families are encouraged to attend the 7 p.m. ceremony and reception at Dedham High School's auditorium, superintendent June Doe said in a message to parents Thursday. According to School Committee member Susan Butler Walko, students will walk across the stage as their names are called and the ceremony will mimic what Wednesday's program called for. It was unclear as of Thursday afternoon if that meant keynote speaker Jim Calhoun would attend Monday's…

Dedham High's Class of 2011 Graduates

Tornado warnings and severe weather did not stop the class of 2011 from receiving their diplomas in an abbreviated ceremony on June 1.

The Dedham High School class of 2011 graduated in the midst of tornado warnings, thunder, lightning and rain during an abbreviated ceremony at the Endicott Estate on June 1.  Originally planned as an outdoor ceremony, inclement weather forced students upstairs and crowds inside as they waited out the oncoming storm. The decision was made that students would process out onto a covered porch in the back of the Endicott Estate to receive their diplomas. Keynote speaker Jim Calhoun, University of Connecticut men's basketball coach, delivered his speech to the crowds gathered under the porch while most graduates and their families stayed indoors. Salutatorian Kelly St. Cyr, class president Brian Coakley, and valedictorian Susannah White made …
