Photo of the Day: Dedham Firefighters Save Deer from Icy Waters

Dedham Firefighters saved a deer from the icy waters of the Charles River.

  Over the weekend, Dedham Firefighters Steve Doherty and Jim Morrison helped pull a deer out of the Charles River while wearing water survival suites. Others involved in the scene were Deputy Chief Jim Nielan, Firefighter Jerry Bradbury, Firefighter Bob Spillane and Firefighter Ken Pike.

Duck Race On The Charles For Charity

10th Annual NVSR Duck Race on the Charles at Riverdale Park on Saturday, June 16.

  The Neponset Valley Sunrise Rotary Club is hosting the 10th Annual Duck Race the Charles at Riverdale Park on Saturday, June 16, rain or shine. This free event features the race, music from the Dedham Public Schools fifth grade band moonwalks, pony rides, face painting, magician, dance contests, live DJ, prizes, clowns and refreshments for the whole family. Duck racers adopt plastic ducks for $5 each or four ducks for $20 and the fifth duck is free. Ducks are assigned a specific number that corresponds with their adopter’s number. The ducks are simultaneously dumped into the river from the Bridge Street Bridge near the Irish Ale House. The first duck to cross the finish line wins $1,000. There are cash prizes for second, third and fourth…

Dolan Canoe Launch on Track for August Opening

The state will handle maintenance of the area.

The canoe launch at the Dolan Center is scheduled to on Aug. 28 following approval of its parking plan Thursday evening. The canoe launch is funded through the Massachusetts Office of Fishing and Boating, Dedham Environmental Coordinator Virginia LeClair said. She said the canoe launch would include eight gravel parking spaces with a permeable driveway from Common Street. Former conservation agent Tony Stella designed the site for Dedham, said LeClair.  He recently checked out a similar site in Millis, added LeClair and was pleased to report that it has held up over the seven years since it was built. “It has [worn] well,” she said “with very little rutting.” LeClair said the town will celebrate the opening with a kick-off party on Aug. 28…

To translate what the abutter said: the state deliberately located the launch site close to the edge of the river to make launching easier. Locating it above the highest floods would make for a much longer carry during the summer and fall. It seems like a simple tradeoff to me.   more ›
