The Zoning Board of Appeals is set to vote on the proposed tower on Tuesday.
An independent consultant told Dedham zoning officials that no locations exist in the town’s mobile communication overlay district for a new T-Mobile cell tower, and the AliMed building remains a logical location. Residents, however, adamantly disagreed. “[I’m] really worried it’s going to bring down the area,” said Karla Reed-McNally, a new homeowner near the 297 High Street location. David Maxson, CEO of Radio Frequency Communications Specialists, studied T-Mobile’s signal strength reports and the town map and found that proposed sites other than the AliMed building “fall below the threshold of T-Mobile’s coverage” and lead to interrupted service. T-Mobile hopes to place a 30-foot cell tower on top of the building. Maxson said he looked …

It seems like many towns fight the battle with cellular phone companies about how and where to place cell towers. On Thursday, T-Mobile will go in front of the Zoning Board of Appeals to ask permission to put a tower on top of AliMed on High Street. We can all agree that cell towers may not be the most aesthetically pleasing feature for a neighborhood - but we all want great cell reception, instead of falling into a dead spot. Does it bother you if a cell tower is in sight of your home? Let us know by leaving your thoughts in the comment section below.

From our reporter Dan Kobialka, who attended Thursday's ZBA meeting: "I asked James McGrail about cell phone towers near schools. He told me state and local governments are "essentially powerless," when it comes to banning cell phone towers near schools. I checked it out further and federal law states municipalities cannot ban cell phone towers based on health concerns, and there are some cell …   more ›
