You Tell Us: Memorable First School Days?

Take a trip down memory lane.

The kids are either back in the classroom already or are starting school soon. So we thought it would be fun to ask what your memorable first school days were. What about your first day of high school? First day of seventh grade?  What made first school days memorable then? The smell of the air becoming crisp? Your new school clothes? Seeing all your friends and other kids you haven't seen? Meeting your new teachers and comparing class schedules with friends? And of course, what are some funny anecdotes you'd like to share? Discuss in the comments below.

Mom's Cookbook

It's Taco Night with a Twist!

Switching things up a little and adding an element of surprise, like serving tacos as a pizza, helps keep the kids interested in and excited for dinner!

I can’t say that I speak for everyone, but with the summer days starting to shorten, and the mornings becoming a little cooler, I’m starting to crave the fall.  It’s not that I wish summer would end, but I’m looking forward to getting back into a regular routine again.  I’m also excited to fire up the oven and bake for a few hours on the weekends and perhaps test out some new soup or stew recipes this fall.  I can’t remember the last time I cooked a roast beef dinner!  Summertime can be too hot for those types of meals. Until we all settle down into our routines (it’ll take some time to get used to our new schedules), I’ve got to have a fun, kid-friendlygo-to dinner for those “starving” kids.  Once they come through the door after school, …

Tales of a Tireless Mom

Tales of a Tireless Mom: The First Day of School Blind Spot

Even veteran parents still draw a blank when it comes to getting back into the swing of things.

As we approach yet another new school year, parents in town are busy buying pencil cases, notebooks and new sneakers.  We’re all over the kids to finish their math and reading homework before the first day and just hope that they haven’t forgotten everything they learned in June.  Which of course, makes it all the more ironic… That every September, without fail, I forget absolutely everything about the school schedule. I can’t explain it, but for some reason the summer serves as a bit of mental eraser for me.  I'm not sure if it’s the long, sunny days, the switch to camp hours or just the fact that a two month break is too much for my forty year old brain to handle, but every September I’m lost.  I can’t remember if we buy or bring lunch …

Must-Have Gadgets for Back-to-School

We put together a quick guide that shows what gadgets you'll need to start the first day of school with.

Whether you're starting high school or college, finding the right gadget is never easy.  That's why we put together a list of the "must-haves" for this Back-to-School season, and a few tips on what to look for. When it comes to laptops, it's important to know that the brand doesn't matter as much as the hardware.  Make sure that your laptop of choice has either Intel i3, or Intel i5 if you're looking for something to get you through writing papers. Laptops with an i7 processor, are more for gamers, and engineering students who require a faster processor for large programs. According to Best Buy in Dedham, their top selling laptop is the HP M6-1045dx.  It has 8GB of memory and a 750GB harddrive. But if you're a student that's studying …

Enjoy. Be involved in as many activities as possible. Time goes by way to fast. Remember, this will be the last time you will be "fairly" treated. The days of being equal with others will come to an end w/graduation. The "real" world won't give a damn about you unless you are properly prepared. All the "protection" mom & dad gave you will be thrown out the window. If you fail a test, get over it…   more ›
