I can’t say that I speak for everyone, but with the summer days starting to shorten, and the mornings becoming a little cooler, I’m starting to crave the fall. It’s not that I wish summer would end, but I’m looking forward to getting back into a regular routine again. I’m also excited to fire up the oven and bake for a few hours on the weekends and perhaps test out some new soup or stew recipes this fall. I can’t remember the last time I cooked a roast beef dinner! Summertime can be too hot for those types of meals. Until we all settle down into our routines (it’ll take some time to get used to our new schedules), I’ve got to have a fun, kid-friendlygo-to dinner for those “starving” kids. Even veteran parents still draw a blank when it comes to getting back into the swing of things.
As we approach yet another new school year, parents in town are busy buying pencil cases, notebooks and new sneakers. We’re all over the kids to finish their math and reading homework before the first day and just hope that they haven’t forgotten everything they learned in June. Which of course, makes it all the more ironic… That every September, without fail, I forget absolutely everything about the school schedule. I can’t explain it, but for some reason the summer serves as a bit of mental eraser for me. I'm not sure if it’s the long, sunny days, the switch to camp hours or just the fact that a two month break is too much for my forty year old brain to handle, but every September I’m lost. I can’t remember if we buy or bring lunch …

As a Red Sox Scholar recipient, Dave Pierre was able to take advantage of getting free school supplies.
While everyone is scrambling to get things ready for back-to-school, there is one Dedham resident who is all set. Dave Pierre, was among 225 students chosen to receive free school supplies at a local Target in Dorcester. The event was held by Red Sox First Baseman, Adrian Gonzalez, as part of the Red Sox Scholars program. Through the program, Pierre was given a new backpack, and $125 for school supplies.

Annual Back-to-School Brigade program underway to collect school supplies for military kids.
Operation Homefront, and its organizations and volunteers, across the nation will begin collecting donated school supplies, along with monetary donations, that they will distribute to the children of service members at the beginning of theschool year in the fall.
