The committee voted to reverse a previous vote to approve a new student conduct policy.
The Dedham School Committee unanimously voted Wednesday to rescind a vote it took in March that called for changes in how the school department works with police on disciplining students. "We had to bring it back first, now we can move it forward," School Committee chairman Mayanne Briggs said. The original policy called for 12-month enforcement, as opposed to 10 months in the current plan, and for the policy to apply to students as young as sixth grade. The current policy only applies to Dedham High School students. Committee members voted to break up the discipline for a student caught in the possession of drugs or alcohol and for a student caught in the presence of either. The Norfolk County Correctional Center holds more than double what it was designed for.
Overcrowding in state jails is a growing problem, including limited quarters at the Norfolk County Correctional Center, Sheriff Michael Bellotti told the Boston Globe. In small cells, the West Street jail now puts up to three inmates in a single cell, Bellotti said in a recent article. While the article left off specific numbers for the Norfolk prison, state projections are for the inmate population to grow from about 11,892 in 2011 to 14,753 by 2019, according to the Globe. Bellotti's interested in expanding the jail, but he told the Globe that he believes it wouldn't receive much public support. "I don’t think a lot of people care," Bellotti said in his interview. "This is not really important to them, and I can understand why." Should…

The 58-year-old man hit his head against the car's windshield.
A 58-year-old Dedham man suffered possible neck and back injuries when he crashed his car into a vacant storefront at 66 Milton St. Tuesday at around 8:30 a.m. The man, driving a black Scion xB, turned right from the Mother Brook Condominiums onto Milton Street, heading westbound, authorities said. According to authorities, the man, who has a physical disability, hit the gas instead of his brake, causing him to strike a pick-up truck heading eastbound on Milton Street. The man then sped about 150 feet into 66 Milton St, a vacant blue building. The car's airbag deployed, but the man's head hit the windshield, officials said. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

No one cares???? Not true! I am a tax payer and I care. My son is there in a three man cell. My son is a drug addict, not an animal. I am sure there are a lot more Mothers and Fathers that are tax payers that also care. I think at least 75% of prisoners that are there is somehow related to drugs. It is an epidemic! I would not mind having my tax dollars spent on trying to help keeping drugs off …   more ›
