Mother Brook Group Hosts Condon Park Clean-Up

Volunteers clear space at Condon Park in an effort to expand area.

More than 15 Dedham residents chopped, pruned and raked their way to a cleaner Condon Park Saturday morning.

Volunteers joined the Mother Brook Community Group in a cleanup effort at the East Dedham park. The MBCG hosted the clean-up in an attempt to raise the quality of life for local residents.

"We want to provide people with a better park and make Condon Park the way it should be," cleanup volunteer Derek Moulton said. "Condon Park should be the best park we have."

The MBCG connects Mother Brook residents and business owners in an attempt to promoting community. Moulton, a Dedham resident for more than a decade, said the group can make a difference.

"I've said MBCG means 'Make Believe Condon's Great,'" Moulton said, "but we don't want to 'make believe' anymore. We want Condon [Park] to be great."

The community group hosted a clean-up of Condon Park's historic Mother Brook Walking Trail last month. Parks and Recreation Commission vice chairman Dan Hart said the walking trail clean-up brings value to the community.

"[The trail's] bringing a lot of attention to Mother Brook," Hart said. "There is a lot of scenery and beauty that most people didn't know was there."

Volunteers chopped weeds, pruned trees and raked leaves during the revitalization effort. Local residents kicked off the cleaning at 7 a.m., working through the morning to beautify the park.

"There are a lot of people in Dedham that take pride in their town," Parks and Recreation Commission chairman John Maida said. "This is their pride right here."

Lloyd Cushman Tree Service provided a wood chipper along with other supplies to volunteers of all ages. The family-owned business has been a part of the Dedham community for 38 years.

"I love being a part of this," co-founder Rita Mae Cushman said. "It's great to see so many fathers and sons working together."

The local business has played an important role in the Condon Park improvements thus far, volunteers said.

"If it wasn’t for [the Lloyd Cushman Tree Service]," Moulton said, "we wouldn't be where we are today."
