Animal Rescue League Pushing Cat Adoptions Ahead of Construction

The Dedham shelter has cut the cost to adopt a cat this summer.

As the prepares to undergo a this summer, the shelter is pushing cat adoptions in June to help with transition for the animals.

During construction, the cats and dogs at the shelter will be moved into a trailer on-site, but there might not be enough room for all of the pets, meaning some would have to be relocated to either South Boston or Cape Cod, an ARL spokesperson said.

"There is a much larger cat population in general [compared to dogs]," said Jennifer Wooliscroft, of ARL Boston. "It can be tricky sometimes to place an older cat."

"It would be the best solution all around to adopt them," Wooliscroft said. "We'll certainly find places for them, we would just rather see them get adopted."

Cat-lovers wanting a new pal can adopt an adult cat for $50, saving themselves $75. On Friday's, the adoption fee will be waived for select adult cats.

While the deal lasts all summer long, according to a flier released by ARL Boston, the last two weekends in June will be crucial as the ARL begins moving the animals out of the shelter in the beginning of July, Wooliscroft said.

"If we can drive a lot of adoptions this weekend and the following weekend [...] the customized trailers should arrive sometime next week, so we are just hoping to get one last adoption push, and adopt out a lot this weekend particularly," she said.

The customized trailer will take time to be fitted for housing the animals, but Wooliscroft said the living conditions inside the trailer are likely better than conditions inside the shelter, but with far less space.

"We desperately need to renovate this shelter," Wooliscroft said. "[The trailers] won't be a bad situation for the time being."
