Throwers Shine in Loss to Wellesley

Girls Track Drops Season Opening Meet

 

The DHS Girls Track team was defeated by Wellesley in their season opening meet Tuesday afternoon by a score of 93-43.

The chilly weather conditions didn’t stop the throwers from making a statement. 
The Dedham throwers outscored Wellesley 26-1.

Sophomore Unity Jean-Louis led the way placing first in shot with a throw of 31’7 and first in discus with a throw of 96’1. Senior captain Ellen Masalsky placed first in javelin with a 97’9 throw and second in discus throwing 88’10. 

Impressive performances included a second place finish by senior Taylor Roberts in both shot (27’3.75) and javelin (80’7).  Senior captain Kerrianne Downing placed third in shot (26’1) and discus (75’10).

With their performances, Unity, Ellen, and Taylor all qualified for the state meet.

On the track, freshman Hannah Ryan, competing in her first high school meet, placed second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 77.1. Wellesley dominated the sprinting events as they swept the 100 and 200. 

In the 800, sophomore Mary Kate Coughlin blew away the competition running 2:35, qualifying her for the state meet.  Coach Barbuto called Mary Kate’s performance “remarkable considering the strength of the wind.”  Junior Allison Martin placed third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.9 and senior Laura O’Hanlon placed second in the 2 mile running 13:09.

Dedham also scored in triple jump with a second place finish by junior Kerri Kelleher (30’5) and a third place finish by freshman Hannah Ryan (28’6).  Senior Emily Hill placed third in high jump jumping 4’3.

Dedham competes again for its first win on Wednesday when they face rival Norwood.
