Celebrating a New Improved Dedham Square

Fall is definitely in the air, and at The Blue Bunny, we’ve turned our attention toward some very busy months ahead.  We are thrilled to be able to say the long months of construction in the Square are finally over, and we look forward to welcoming back our holiday shoppers with a newer, safer, more beautiful downtown.

While we are preparing our store for fall, we want to acknowledge the excellent community spirit that helped us all (customers, businesses, and town officials), get through the last 18 months of construction.  While there are always nay-sayers, we know how many people worked very hard to build consensus to envision a new improved square, get the engineering study done, rally for state funds, plan and revise, and work through all kinds of weather, criticism, and frustrations to get the job done.

Who among us was not in awe watching the dismantling and rebuilding of the retaining wall on the High Street side of the town lot?  We love the brick crosswalks, the new benches, sidewalks wide enough for a table and chairs, and that oh-so-smooth pavement after all the months of bumping through the work area.  Who remembers how overgrown and crumbling the old Keystone lot was?  There is more parking than ever, and the pay stations are specifically designed to encourage turnover in clientele.  Who has not said a silent prayer when crossing the street in the Square before the new pedestrian lights and walk signals were installed?  Finally, we can with cross with confidence.  All those things being said, we have also been assured that everything is subject to review and the town will be keeping a close watch on how traffic and parking patterns are established.  

We are proud of our town, our downtown community, and our loyal customer base, who have endured the temporary inconveniences to get us to this point.  At The Blue Bunny, we have always believed that a strong and healthy Dedham Square benefits the entire town, increasing livability, basic quality of life, and town spirit.  Along with our fellow merchants, restaurants, and other businesses, we are delighted to see the streets alive on weekends, and in the evenings, with families getting ice cream, neighbors enjoying the open air together at an outside table or bench, and bicyclists, movie-goers, and music-lovers adding to the mix.
