My 2011 New Year's Resolution

My 2011 New Year's resolution—to incorporate more goodness into my family's everyday meals without breaking the bank or losing my sanity.

Psst—how’s that New Year’s Resolution going? You know, the one where you promised yourself that you’d eat healthier in 2011? Hmmmm? So-so perhaps? Has it fizzled like most resolutions do? Well, what if I told you that my resolution this year was to eat MORE—would you believe me? Actually, to be more precise, I’ve promised myself to get rid of the processed junk and eat more goodness, more wholesomeness, and more of everything that has gone missing from our daily meals because they have been replaced with quicker, more convenient and unhealthier versions.

How it's going so far...
Well, I am happy to say that so far my resolution’s been on target and I—along with my husband and son—actually feel healthier since the beginning of the year. Our meals at home are healthier, more colorful, and as my preschool-aged son puts it, “fun and yummier than ever.” So with that said, in this blog I’d like to share with you how our family has gone from consuming overly processed foods and how we have begun to go back to the basics.

Don’t get me wrong, we were never a family that ate a whole lot of junk food or pre-packaged meals, and I’m proud to say my son has never eaten a fast-food burger from a particularly popular restaurant chain that most kids can’t seem to resist. (Yeah, you know which one I’m referring to.) But we were indeed unknowingly guilty of eating some surprisingly not-so-healthy choices—choices we thought were “healthy” until we started scrutinizing food labeling a bit more carefully. I haven’t replaced everything, but I have and still am slowly weeding out the unhealthiest choices we were making by replacing them with healthier alternatives. I'm constantly learn new ways to incorporate more goodness in my family’s everyday meals without breaking the bank or losing my sanity. So far, so good—knock on wood.
