Senior Trio Lead Young Dedham Girl's Basketball Squad

A few early wins could have Dedham qualify for the tournament before conference play begins.

One down, one to go.

With an easy 46-13 win Monday evening against Dorchester Academy, Dedham girl's basketball could qualify for the postseason under the Sullivan Rule with a win Wednesday against Innovation Academy Charter School.

But that won't completely satisfy coach Don Savi, now in his eighth year on the Dedham bench.

"We still want to win half our games - that is our first goal. We'd like to get to 10 wins," coach Don Savi said.

And it won't do for three senior captains hoping to lead a young squad this season.

"Two years ago, we had no seniors," said Kelly Quinn. "So I don't think that will be a big challenge."

Dedham returns six players off last year's squad that made it to the second round of the MIAA playoffs, but will need to work hard underneath after losing several forwards.

"We are not the biggest team in the world, and we know that," coach Savi said. "We have some quickness though and we are going to use that to our advantage and try to cover up the lack of height we have."

The quickness could lead to a faster pace for Savi's team.

"We definitely want up-tempo basketball - I think that will fit us well," coach Savi said.

"We can use our speed to our advantage," said senior Jenna Savi. "I think we are faster than most teams, but most teams are bigger than us."

In addition to Quinn, Warjas and Jenna Savi, Emily Hill, Renee Gassler and Ellen Masalsky return.

"I think with the 10 we have, I expect them all to contribute and I expect them all to play well," coach Savi said.

Dedham was led Monday evening by Jenna Savi with 14 points, Libby Masalsky with eight points, Hill with six points, and Gassler with six points.
