Roller Coaster Week for Dedham Softball

After facing 'powerhouse' Norwood, Dedham beats up on Brookline on Wednesday.

softball continued with their roller coaster ride through the rain and their Bay State League schedule Wednesday afternoon, with a lofty 26-1 win over Brookline.

The game was played at Sugrue Field at due to the inclement weather and the Marauders responded by jumping out to an early 14-0 lead after one inning against a troubled Brookline team.

One bright spot for Dedham (10-6) was freshman, and hockey sensation, Colleen Downing’s first inning home run that cleared the short left field porch for her first career home run.

When asked whether this was as big as scoring a goal for the Marauder hockey team, Downing responded, "I think this is bigger than scoring a goal. You don’t get them as often."

That might be the case for the star forward who can score with the best of them, but her home run gives her softball head coach Erika Eisenhunt plenty to think about during the next couple of weeks. With Downing being a proven right-handed bat with power, in only her fourth game called up for the varsity, she may add some needed depth to a team looking for more runs.

"She will bounce back and forth with us," said Eisenhunt about Downing. "We have Gina Reid as our DH and that’s what Colleen would do for us is DH. That’s her strength."

The big win came after a tough loss to powerhouse Norwood on Monday, and now the girls will have to re-adjust to a faster pitcher in order to beat the Red and Blue of Natick, who beat Dedham 3-0 earlier this season.

"We are going to get some quick hitting practice tomorrow before the game to adjust," said Eisenhunt.

In the Norwood loss, the Marauders fought back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game late before succumbing to Norwood's all-state senior Ali Maloof, who came in relief as well as laced a triple in the bottom of the seventh, and eventually scored the winning run on a passed ball for the 5-4 Norwood win.

"We played really well against Norwood," said Eisenhunt. "We played flawlessly in the field, but we could have performed a little better at the plate."

Eisenhunt added, "It was a tough way to go down."
