Marauders Roar Back from 6-Run Deficit, Upset Walpole

Dedham softball comes from six runs behind to win 9-7.

In softball the unexpected can always be expected. In the case of the Dedham Marauders nothing could be farther from the truth.

In miraculous fashion, the Marauders not only redeemed themselves from an early season drubbing to Walpole, but also rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat the 16-3 Rebels 9-7 in Dedham Monday afternoon.

"The only defense against an outstanding offense, is more offense on our part,"said Dedham coach Erika Eisenhunt, "and we came through."

With junior ace Brooke Sheehan getting the start in another cold and damp spring day, Sheehan struggled to find her fastball in the early going as the Rebels jumped on her in the second inning.

Walpole's Lauren Bodin led off with a single, while Brittany McGraw and Katie Cavaca added two-run singles to help the Rebels jump out to what seemed like an insurmountable 6-0 lead in the second.

The Marauders scratched back for two runs in the bottom half, to get themselves on the board, but Sheehan would need to bear down against an explosive offense like Walpole if Dedham was to have a chance.

And she did.

After giving up eight hits in the first two innings to go along with six runs, the Dedham ace shutdown Walpole the rest of the way by scattering three hits and one run the rest of the way.

"Sometimes I don’t put enough leg drive in it," said Sheehan on her early inning struggles. "So when I focus I usually bring it [her fastball] back up."

After Dedham added a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Marauders were able to get six runs in the fifth off a very good Walpole pitcher, Mahron Hoag.

Emily Mosca led off by getting hit by a pitch, followed by a Meaghan Paton single, and then the big bat of Gina Reid (3-3 2 RBIs), answered with a towering double to score two runs, and she was followed by two more big extra-base hits.

Back-to-back triples by senior Nicole Perosino (2 RBIs) and Laura Tavalone (2 RBIs) led to two more runs as Tavalone wisely stole home to give the Marauders a two-run advantage after five innings at 9-7.

The rest was left to Sheehan who retired six of the final seven Rebel hitters for the complete game win.

"She pitched a fantastic game," said Eisehunt. "To let that happen one inning and come back and have her respond the way she did was great."

"I was nervous, I really wanted to beat them so I was focused and tried my best," said Sheehan.

The Marauders beat one of the best Bay State teams in Walpole, and look to increase their 11-6 record with three more games this week against Milton, Medway and Natick.

"We are solid as can be in the field," said Eisenhunt. "We’ve got to have a day at the plate and we did that today."
