Jim Calhoun Announced Retirement
Jim Calhoun is not only a three-time NCAA coaching champ for UConn, he also coached right here for Dedham High School.
, 70, former dedham resident, announced his retirement. In his 40 years as a coach he was able to win 873 games, and winning national titles four times.
Calhoun is well known for being the head coach for schools like UConn and Northeastern. But he was also a Dedham High School teacher, and helped DHS' basketball team win the state championship in 1971.

According to the Associated Press, Calhoun sufferered from a fractured hip due to a bicycle accident last month. In fact, he told ESPN that his hip is the main reason why he is retiring.
But Calhoun has proved to be fighter, surviving cancer three times, working while he was dealing with a painful spinal condition, and returning to work just four days after back surgery.

With retirement, Calhoun can now choose to either recieve a $1 million cash payout, or choose an athletic department position with a $300,000 annual salary.
Not a bad way to end a full career.
