Flynn Set to 'Right the Ship' on Dedham Football Field

Alumnus David Flynn was named head football coach this week.

The season of what will be new beginnings for the football team opened a new chapter this week as to the vacant head coaching position.

"We want to start right here and now and we want to build a successful and competitive football program that is a mainstay," he said.

Flynn previously coached for DHS football from 2003 to 2006 and served as its offensive coordinator.

The new coach said he would employ a balanced run and pass attack next season with the Marauders that will feature quick, high-percentage passes.

"Offensively, I have a very balanced attack. We are not going to be one-dimensional, so that is very exciting," he said.

Out to find a coach that could work to groom future Marauder stars at the Pop Warner level, Flynn seems to fit the bill, as he said he will work the relationships to mold young players into the future of the team.

Kids should grow up in town dreaming of donning the maroon and gray, he said with bounding pride in his voice.

"That should be emphasized in any high school football job. That is your bloodline," he said.

Athletic Director Michael Plansky, hired in August 2010,.

The Marauders will play what they hope will be a less strenuous schedule for the next two years after receiving a reprieve from the challenging - and often struggle-filled - Bay State Conference. They will play more non-conference games than normally allowed by the MIAA.

But that doesn't change Flynn's mindset heading into 2011.

"I will play anyone, anywhere, anytime," he said. "We focus on us and the success of our program."

Flynn expressed excitement at bringing in the whole community to kick-off the season. He plans to meet with parents, Pop Warner players and other involved community members between now and the start of the spring sports season.

"Everyone is going to be accountable, everyone is going to be on board, and we are going to right the ship," he said.
