Dedham Softball Upsets #2 Norton

The Marauders beat the Lancers 10-1 in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South softball tournament.

If anything went wrong for the Norton Lancers, the Dedham Marauders were there to make the Lancers pay for it. Challenging #2 Norton in the opening round of the MIAA Division 2 South softball tournament, the Marauders shocked the 17-3 Lancers with a 10-1 win over Norton to advance to the quarterfinals.

“They (Dedham) took advantage of all our mistakes and we didn’t capitalize on anything when we could,” Norton coach Brian Clemmey said. “Today was just a bad day for us.”

The Marauders upset the Lancers despite having to play their second game in as many days in sweltering heat. On May 31, Dedham beat Medfield 7-5 to advance out of the preliminary round.

“Two days in this weather isn’t easy but I think the adrenaline does it for you when your out here. You just kinda forget because you're in the moment and excited to be here,” Dedham coach Erika Eisenhut said.

Despite Norton starting the game with a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, the Marauders were able to get a pair of runs on the board on a Mary St. Cyr single to center field to give Dedham a lead after two innings.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, an error filled inning helped lead to four runs by the Marauders.

“We (Norton) made more errors in one game than we did in the entire season. They (Dedham) took advantage of the opportunities and that was it,” Clemmey said.

With two on and no outs, St. Cyr was able to reach first on a dropped third strike and gave Meaghan Patton enough time to score from third.

Later in the inning with bases loaded, Gina Reid put another run on the board, scoring from third base to extend the lead to five with only one out.

Additional runs from St. Cyr and Kristina Mitchell made sure Dedham was in control of the game with three innings left to play.

Down 10-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lancers picked up their lone run of the game when Jackie Dunn doubled to allow Christine Tamulis to score from second base.

Dedham will travel to #10 Apponequet at a time and day to be announced.
