Two Times the 'Ones': Dedham Grads Do It Again [VIDEO]

The class of 2011 finally had their chance to toss hats high up in the air Monday night at a second ceremony.

graduates finally had the chance to toss their caps high into the night's sky Monday evening - five days after first donning them.

Rain, lightning and thunder caused families and graduates to scrabble into a cramped on Wednesday, and school officials to hurried through handing out diplomas.

"Obviously the ceremony we had hoped to deliver was a failure. I failed to make a decision to cancel the celebration, and I should've done so at noon," school superintendent June Doe said in a five-minute opening speech. "It is a decision that I regret and I accept full responsibility for not acting on my instinct to make that call."

But on Monday, camera-wiedling families were given the opportunity to do what they couldn't the first time - watch their graduate stroll across the stage to be recognized.

One hundred and one of the 176 members of the class of 2011 attended Monday's ceremony that featured planned speeches by salutatorian Kelly St. Cyr and class president Brian Coakley. Valedictorian Susannah White tossed her original speech in favor of an updated version.

White highlighted the pluses of their unique night last week - sitting in "swanky bathtubs" while wearing caps and gowns. She also told her fellow graduates not to be resentful about the first ceremony.

"I know many of us are a little bitter, and/or a little disappointment about what went down last Wednesday.

"It is easy to pass blame from one person to the next," she said. "But what is easy isn't always best. In fact, it is rarely best."

Doe said she hoped Monday's ceremony showed the class of 2011 how important they are to Dedham High School.

"To the students, I am truly, deeply sorry for the resulting distress and incredible disappointment experienced by all of you, your classmates and their families," Doe said.

White even found a quote to sum up the rollercoaster week.

"As Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, 'There are no second acts in life.' Well 2011, you proved him wrong."
