Riverdale Elementary Student's Bathroom Beautification Committee

Jake and his classmates have spent hours of their own free time, to adorn the walls of the boys and girls rooms at Riverdale.

It took 5th grade Riverdale Elementary student, Jake McHugh, a few pre-lunch visits to the boys room, before he spoke up.

Now, don't get this wrong! The school's restrooms are clean, sanitary, and well-stocked. But, in Jake's eyes, they were just lacking something… character!

He approached Principal Dr. Krista Lucas and asked if “they” could do something to make the restrooms nicer. Never one to dismiss an idea, Dr. Lucas suggested that Jake speak to his classmates and come up with a plan.

By the end of recess, Jake McHugh had a dozen boys and girls names in a notebook. Their “plan” was to “beautify” the school's restrooms.

Over the past few weeks, Dr. Lucas has formed a 5th grade team – the Bathroom Beautification Committee.

Jake and his classmates have spent hours of their own free time, to create, color, and laminate countless posters to adorn the walls of the boys and girls rooms at Riverdale.

On a recent visit to the school, Dr. Lucas told us how proud she was of the students and how pleased this whole project has made her. One 5th grade boy “with a plan”, has drawn together a group of his peers and has set an example for the entire school.

Plans are in the works for a fresh coat of paint to follow, on a weekend in the future. Dr. Lucas hopes that all of her students realize, that with a little initiative, great things can happen when people work together as a team
