New DHS Principal Pitches Graduation Plan

New principal Ron McCarthy pitched School Committee members on a new graduation schedule that would take effect in June.

Under McCarthy's "first draft," the ceremony would take place in the morning on Saturday, June 9 at the new athletic complex. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony would take place in the school's auditorium on the same day.

"It's just less hectic than during the week," McCarthy said, speaking from experience at previous schools.

Committee chairman Kevin Coughlin suggested McCarthy draft a few proposals and present them at a later meeting to the board.

The committee tossed out several ideas for McCarthy to consider.

Susan Butler-Walko suggested a Saturday graduation, and a Sunday rain date. If weather prevents a Sunday ceremony, then it could be brought indoors, she said.

"Talking to people, I get the feeling that the preference is to have it outside, so they can bring as many guests as possible," Butler-Walko said.

Other members maintained support for the one-day option.

"Two different days is difficult to manage," said member Mayanne Briggs.

A new graduation schedule comes after the school on a Wednesday in June despite rain, lightning and a tornado warning. a week later indoors in the school's auditorium.

McCarthy said he would collect feedback and ideas from seniors and parents once school begins, and acknowledged that his plan was a work in progress.

"I'm open to many things," he said.
