DHS Students Will Need Parents OK on Classes

Parents will need to electronically approve their student's 2012-13 classes.

Over the next few weeks, students at will choose courses for the 2012-13 school year, and they'll need a parent to approve the selections.

Parents will be required to logon to their Power School accounts and approve their student's schedule, said DHS principal Ron McCarthy during a School Committee meeting on March 7.

"A parent can now go in and see what their child has selected," McCarthy said.

The school also seeks to add several new courses for next school year, McCarthy said. The committee tabled the vote in order to have more time to review the proposal.

Courses include Advanced Placement French and Advanced Placement Spanish that will be part of a two-year preparation for the AP exams.

English Language Learners and native speakers will be encouraged to enroll in Spanish for the Native Speaker and Latinos in the United States, which will help students improve their English skills and learn about immigration patterns and groups of immigrants, according to the classes' descriptions.

Other courses include:

  • Psychology CPI
  • Facing History and Ourselves
  • Graphic Design
  • Strength and Conditioning for the Competitor 2
  • Advanced TV Broadcasting

"And all of this will not require any additional staffing," McCarthy said.

The additional classes would make scheduling courses more complex, superintendent June Doe said at the meeting.

"We are very ambitious," Doe said.
