Dedham Introduces Ron McCarthy as New Principal

With Jake Santamaria retiring at the end of this school year, the Dedham School Committee introduced Ron McCarthy as the new Dedham High School Principal.

At the last night’s meeting, Superintendent June Doe announced that has secured a new principal for next year: Ron McCarthy. McCarthy will take the post of current Principal Jake Santamaria, who will .

McCarthy has been in education for 27 years in four different communities, most recently as the principal at Bourne High School. He has held a variety of positions within the educational system: starting his career as a Social Studies teacher, he has been a coach, athletic director, assistant principal and principal. McCarthy is also a father of two high school-age children.

At Wednesday night's meeting, McCarthy said he was thankful for the opportunity to be a part of a school system on the rise.

McCarthy also stressed the importance of communication. School Committee member Dimitria Sullivan was happy to hear that McCarthy took so much value in communication because she believes in “over-communication.”

School Committee member Kevin Coughlin told the new principal that he is looking forward to the work he will do with the vice-principals already on staff. He also noted that McCarthy has some big shoes to fill; replacing a man with over 30 years of experience in the Dedham School System.

School Committee Chair Tom Ryan was on the search committee for a new principal and was present for the site visit, when McCarthy met with students, teachers and parents. Ryan heard great feedback and was thoroughly impressed at the favorable impression McCarthy left on the Bourne community. The staff, according to Ryan, not only enjoyed working with him but also respected his leadership as principal.

McCarthy said that he sees that the Dedham school community has pride in values and that high expectations exist within the community. He said that he can see it and feel it, and that he can tell that Dedham is a great match for him. School Committee members agree.

“I think you are a very good fit,” Chairman Ryan said.
