Dedham HS Track Causes Stone Park Delay

Track, lights and concession stand lead to delay in the athletic field opening.

At the first Dedham School Committee meeting of the academic year, Superintendent June Doe updated on the committee on the delay of the sports complex opening as the pouring of the track was pushed back.

Doe said, "We’re weather dependent." The pouring of the new track has been delayed because of the recent tropical storm and several days of rain.

She added that she wanted to thank Joe Flanagan, director of the Department of Public Works, for all of help.

“We wouldn’t be where we are without the help of the DPW,” she said.

The delay on the field construction has led to at least two varsity soccer games to get moved to other locations. A grand opening is planned for Sept. 23, the first home football game.

Committee member Dave Roberts said the School Building Rehabilitation Committee will be meeting on Monday, and providing more information on the track.

Roberts said a certain amount of curing after the track is poured needs to be done to maintain certain warrantees. Committee member Tom Ryan said it is all a 10 to 14 day process.

The field lights also have caused a delay. NStar was unable to turn the power on as they were dealing with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

Ryan said that the pre-fabricated concession stand is on order, the foundation is already poured, it should be arriving within the next few days and then installed within the next week or two.
