Dedham High Students 'Give It a Shot'

Grant program covers $1,200 in college application fees for Dedham students.

Dedham High School students are encouraged to take a chance and apply to one "reach" college thanks to the “Give It a Shot” grant provided by  a local non-profit, Dedham Shines.

Dedham Shines has awarded $1,200 to 18 students applying early action or early decision to a “reach” college of their choice.

The Give It a Shot grant is in its third year and aims to remove the financial risk of an additional application fee.

“This is just one more example of the community standard that we have set for our young people," Dedham High School Ron McCarthy said in a written statement. “The Give It a Shot grant has encouraged seniors to apply to colleges and universities that will not only challenge them academically, but help them grow and flourish at some of our nation's top schools."

Dedham Shines is dedicated to promoting a vibrant community through programs that cultivate civic engagement and support for art, education, and culture.

Students are still encouraged to apply for funding available toward regular decision college applications; grant applications are due December 6th.

“There is a wide variety of colleges that students are reaching for.  There is no ‘right’ college and we hope that it broadens the students’ college search, ultimately increasing their chances of finding a good-fit school and possibly a better financial package,” Monika Wilkinson, co-president of Dedham Shines said.
