Dedham High School Teacher Wins State AP Award

A teacher from Dedham has been recognized for her efforts and excellence in math education. 

Kristine Holloran, a teacher of AP Calculus at Dedham High School, was recently named a Partners in Excellence award winner for outstanding contribution to student achievement. 

The award is given via Mass Insight Educatino's AP STEM program, which recently recognized educators for their contribution to student achievement and their dedication to college success during school year 2013-2014.

Holloran, one of the 22 winners out of more than 500 AP teachers in the program statewide, will be honored on April 17 at the Museum of Science in Boston.

Holloran is in her eighth year teaching math at Dedham High School. Seven of those years she has spent teaching AP Calculus. She also is on her third year of serving as the chair of the Dedham High School and Dedham Middle School math departments. 

"I take great pleasure int he challenge of teaching AP Calculus, as it affords me the opportunity to show my students that they are capable of truly understanding higher level math and how interesting it can be," Holloran said in a statement. 

She added, "As educators we need to stress to all students that mathematics is not an innate ability. Success in mathematics is the result of hard work and perseverance, skills that will serve our students well in all their future endeavors. When we provide our students with situations where they experience success, their believe in their own abilities will grow and we will see more students work to their full potential."

Holloran graduated from Providence College with a degree in Mathematics/Secondary Education and later earned her master's degree in Mathematics at Salem State College, as well as a second master's in Educational Leadership from Framingham State University.
