Selectmen Propose to Use Rustcraft Property for Multiple Municipal Use

The board of selectmen are proposing to use the Rustcraft property as a one-stop place for residents and businesses.

The board of selectmen invited the town to talk about the possibility of using the Rustcraft property for multiple municipal use.

On Thursday night the board presented a presentation explaining why 100 Rustcraft Rd. would have enough room for a police station, town hall, a senior center, public works and some others.

Selectman Carmen DelloIacono explained that the meeting was important because they are getting close to negotiations on the property and they wanted to involve the town.

"There is nothing here that is a definite," he said "We want to share this with you to make sure that everyone is included and to give us feedback. One thing tonight you will not get is the costs because we are still in negotiations."

Chairman Mike Butler talked about the benefits of having multiple municipalities under one roof.

"This would provide a one-stop service for residents and businesses," he said. "You wouldn't have to drive a mile here and then drive somewhere else to get things done.  Everything would be under one roof."

The proposed square footage would be between 130,000 and 140,000 sq. ft.  The draft also included added parking capacity and landscaping to help improve the appearance of the lot.

The senior center and the police station would have their own entrance and there would be a study done on pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

A town meeting member expressed how the town would pay for the property.  Selectmen confirmed that the purchase would be made through the meal and hotel taxes.

Currently there is $3 million in the fund and the town would need approval from a special town meeting to receive the money for the purchase.

Dedham resident Daryl Norman was concerned that there would be a gun range on the property.  But the selectmen confirmed that it would only be used to train police officers.  It would not be open to the public.

As the town receives final numbers on costs, there will be more public meetings scheduled to receive feedback.

"This is healthy discussion," DelloIacono said. "That's why it says draft, because we still don't have the final numbers."

As for the current town hall and police station.  There are some talks about having the district attorney's office come back to Dedham Square in the town hall building.  But it is still uncertain what would happen to the police station.

If the town reaches an agreement on the property, the options and concepts would be presented at Town Meeting in the fall for approval.

The presentation is also available on the town's website for viewing.

I thought the Selectmen are supposed to work in the best interests of the residents of the entire town. Why does the town allow an elected official like Carmen Dellolacono promote his agenda of appeasing town employees? In 30 years I have never seen an elected official try to spend infinite amounts of town funds in order to meet the needs, wants & wishes of town employees. We don't need another multi-million dollar project for the benefit of town employees, most who are already overpaid & underworked. This project should be terminated immediately.

Town would consolidate Police, Fire, Town Hall and Senior Center in one new facility? Major amounts of prime real estate in town center will be available for private development, thereby increasing the tax base? Excellent idea! This is the type of out of the box thinking Dedham has needed for years!

Thank god Daryl is worried about a gun range in the building really is that all your worried about. I think we should worry about how this is paid for.I really don't need my taxes going up because we are already suffering in this town with our high taxes.Lets hope that we don't have to suffer for what the selectmen choose because we know they have their own agenda, and its usually not in our interests
