Off-Duty Boston Cop Honored for Stopping Armed Robbery

Dedham selectmen honored a Boston Police Department detective who thwarted at in Oakdale Square in June.

Det. Michael Kane and about a dozen family members and fellow officers filled the Francis O'Brien Meeting Room at Thursday as Kane received high praise from Chief Michael d'Entremont and from selectmen.

"The actions you took that evening in that store clearly prevented serious injury to the clerk," Board of Selectmen chair Jim MacDonald said. "Most important, you took a bad person off the street."

Kane was in Oakdale Square with his wife, when he saw 23-year-old Sean Ryan-Fallon enter the store wearing a hooded sweatshirt drawn over his face and gloves on his hands, according to police.

Kane said he entered behind Ryan-Fallon and saw him with a knife out behind the cash register. Kane pulled his off-duty service gun and ordered Ryan-Fallon to the ground. By the time Dedham officers arrived, Ryan-Fallon was in handcuffs, according to police.

"We want to thank you for putting your life on the line," MacDonald said.

"People like us are lucky to have people like you who see something off, or weird, or wrong and follow after it, as opposed to turning the other way," said selectman Sarah MacDonald.

Kane received a plaque from the Town of Dedham, and his wife said it was the first time he pulled his service weapon off-duty.

"It was a very nerve-wracking thing to have happen to me and [my wife], and it ended well. [I am] very appreciative of all the help I got," Michael Kane said.
