Lynch Wins by a Landslide, Will Face Harrison in November

Congressman Stephen Lynch wins the Democratic Primary and will face Republican Vernon Harrison in the Nov. 2 general election.

In what has become an anti-incumbent election, Congressman Stephen Lynch avoided the trend by winning Tuesday's Democratic primary by a landslide. Lynch said that he couldn't do it without his family, friends and campaign team.

"They say there is an anti-incumbent bias, but we didn't see that in our race," Lynch said.

Lynch won by 30 percent with nearly all precincts reporting.

Close to a hundred supporters gathered at McKeon Post in Dorchester to celebrate the big win. Lynch was introduced by state Sen. Jack Hart, who said that Lynch is the guy that has the moxie to stand up for what is right.

"This is a very decisive win for a guy who has done an extraordinary job in Washington," Hart said. "He has the toughness to stand up for what is right."

After Lynch thanked those close to him, as well as everyone who has supported him over the years, he explained that by flying back and forth from Washington to Boston to be with family has made him a stronger congressman. He said that he values the input that the people of his district have and likes that people are willing to express concerns directly to him.

"I often say that Congress is a great place to work if you like to fight, know what you are fighting for, and who you are fighting for," said Lynch.

Lynch stressed that the economy is one of the toughest points affecting the nation, and that he will continue to focus on small businesses because they make up 80 percent of the economy. By being a  Democrat, he feels that he has the upper hand in dealing with this.

"It is the Democrats who are traditionally champions of the working class people," said Lynch.

Lynch also said that taking care of the country's veterans is a top priority. This pertains to recent veterans as well as those from World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

In the end, he said that it is all about identifying the issues at hand. He said that he is the only congressman who has worked on construction sites or stood in an unemployment line when times were tough. By feeling the pain of those in the community, Lynch said he will help make this country better.

"What I try to do is be a common sense Democrat," Lynch said.

Dolly and John Lowe, who worked on Lynch's campaign, were very pleased about the big win and said that it couldn't have happened to a better guy. Dolly told of the generosity and kindness that Lynch had shown her when she was sick with breast cancer, and said that he is the type of person that goes above and beyond what most do.

"He's a typical South Boston guy," said Dolly. "He does what he says he will do and takes every person to heart."

Lynch will face Republican Vernon Harrison in the Nov. 2 general election.
