Dedham Square Project Point of Debate with Selectmen Candidates

Four candidates of the Board of Selectmen debated the merits and the policies surrounding the Dedham Square Improvement Project.

Four of the five candidates on the ballot for Board of Selectmen in Deham took to the stage Monday evening for the Dedham Education Partnership candidates forum.

Candidates Robert O'Connell, , and fielded three questions each from moderator Dan Driscoll, but many related back to a debate surrounding the .

From calls for additional traffic studies, to moving priorities to fund other projects instead, the challengers - O'Connell and Panagopoulos - argued against moving forward at this time with the plan.

"I'm a strong supporter of a police and fire station," Panagopoulos said.

MacDonald and Reynolds reiterated their support for the plan, but said the Board of Selectmen should evaluate the policy regarding what major projects go to voters and what goes to Town Meeting.

"I don't think people understand how strong [Town Meeting] is," Reynolds said. "The Board of Selectmen can make the recommendation, but a major projects can be killed in Town Meeting. And you know what, that is a good thing. That means the process is working."
