Dedham Begins Fully Accessible Playground Preparation

New equipment at Condon Park will be in place by mid-September, according to project leaders.

Most kids in Dedham may not be looking forward to the turn of the calendar as September means the start of school.

But, the beginning of the ninth month also means the opening of a new playground in East Dedham.

crews are ahead of schedule as they prepare for a major overhaul, project leaders told Dedham Patch this week.

“No problems so far,” said Donald Reisner, who spearheaded the playground effort. “We just wanted to get [preparation] out of the way, because we could.”

put forth the plan for a fully accessible playground in the late summer last year, and plans are for children to play on the new equipment come mid-September.

“Because of the type of playground it is […] professionals really need to put it in because you don’t want to have anything off by even a few inches,” Dedham Parks and Recreation commissioner Jim Maher said in a phone interview.

Parks and Recreation commissioners hope to begin construction on the playground between Sept. 1 and Sept. 6, Maher said.

New England Spec won the bid for the new playground, which will feature a “pour-and-play” surface, and equipment suitable for all children of all ages, Reisner said.

Some specialized equipment will be geared toward a child with a disability, but it will blend it and be fun for every kid, Reisner said.

“The kids are going to love it and it will be something the whole town will be proud of when it is done,” Reisner said.

Reisner added he hopes to throw a grand opening for the playground in September.
