Alleged U.S. Marshal Impersonator Indicted

Eric Williams was arrested in Dedham in January and charged with impersonating a U.S. Marshal.

Eric Williams was indicted by a grand jury this week in U.S. District Court in Boston on charges of impersonating a U.S. Marshal and possessing an official badge.

In an affidavit filed with the court, Marshals allege Williams stole a blank check from an unidentified Dedham woman and cashed it for $700. He also allegedly stole a blank check from another Massachusetts woman and cashed that one for $600, and a checkbook from his aunt in Walpole and made checks out to himself totaling $2,800. Williams told the Dedham woman that he worked for the U.S. Marshals and she told authorities that he drove a dark-colored Ford Explorer equipped with emergency lights, according to the affidavit.

After Williams was arrested on a warrant in Norwood on Jan. 26, he told U.S. Marshals that he purchased a fraudulent Marshals badge, parking permit and other credentials on the auction website Ebay. He told authorities he used a stolen credit card to buy the credentials, according to the affidavit.

Williams told authorities that he used the same stolen credit card, which he allegedly stole from his New Hampshire landlord, to buy the used Ford Explorer in Derry, N.H., for about $5,000, authorities stated.

The affidavit goes on to allege that Williams used his credentials to pick-up women and receive government discounts at area hotels, including the Residence Inn in Norwood.

Williams is facing five federal felony counts of impersonating a federal officer and one count of possession of an official badge.

On Feb. 4, Williams was ordered to remain in jail until trial.
