Police Log: Shoplifters Caught at Stop & Shop, Sears and Best Buy

The following information was provided by the Dedham Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, they do not indicate conviction.

Monday, March 17

At 10:06 a.m., Dedham Police responded to Stop & Shop on Providence Highway on a report of a shoplifter. Upon arrival, officers spoke with employees of the store, who claimed that a female suspect conceal five beauty products totalling to about $117.88 in her purse and then attempt to leave the store. Police spoke with the suspect and discovered that she also had an additional purse with a price tag still on it, containing two unopened boxes of perfume that she admitted to taking from Sears in Chestnut Hill. Officers subsequently issued a criminal complaint to the woman.

At 3:18 p.m., police responded to Best Buy on a report of shoplifting. Upon arrival officers spoke with Best Buy staff and arrested Olujimi Fayemiwo, 34, of Brockton for shoplifting merchandise in the store.

At 7:49 p.m., police received a report that two laptops and an iPad were taken from a vehicle on Providence Highway. 

Tuesday, March 18

At 12:30 p.m., police responded to Carter's on a report of a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, the owner of the vehicle claimed she had been working and when she went to go on a break she found that her jacket, phone and car keys, which she placed in the back room of the business, were missing. Her debit card was also reportedly taken. When she went to the parking lot she noticed her vehicle was missing. Police viewed surveillence footage, but were unable to find anyone stealing the items. The matter remains under investigation. 

At 2:39 p.m., police responded to Providence Highway on a report that a man had taken a GPS and placed it under his coat from Best Buy, when confronted the man dropped the GPS device and fled the store. 

Wednesday, March 19

At about 7:50 p.m., an individual reported to police that his Samsung Galaxy S3 was stolen from his vehicle, the item being valued at about $300. The man reportedly had been at Auto Zone at the time, when he left the vehicle briefly to throw something away in a trash barrel, leaving the door open while doing so. When he returned to the vehicle, he noticed his cell phone was missing. 

Thursday, March 20

At 2:50 a.m., police received a report that a large dog was out of control and thrashing around on Arlington Road. Officers reported that the animal was enduring an active seizure and contacted the MSPCA-Angell hospital. 

At 8:15 p.m., police responded to the Residence Inn on Elm Street on a report of a suspicious man who was walking back and forth near the entrance to the hotel. Several guests complained about seeing the man in the area, describing him as walking slow and hunched over. A guest also found a syringe in the area, which was brought to the hotel for disposal. Police responded but were unable to locate the man; the syringe was disposed in a sharps container. 

Friday, March 21

At 1:14 p.m., police arrested Matthew Saman, 26, of West Roxbury in the area of Whiting Avenue on a warrant. 

At 8:37 p.m., police responded to Curve Street on a report that a young man aged between 18-20 years wearing jeans and a black hoodie and baseball hat opened the garage door of a home in the neighborhood but when he saw the homeowner he ran off towards Gould Street. 

Saturday, March 22

At 6:07 a.m., police received a report that a stolen vehicle had been recovered in the area of Blackington Street in North Adams. The keys of the vehicle were reportedly locked inside and there had been damage to the vehicle's rear tail light, according to reports. 

At 12:15 p.m., police responded to the Dedham Mall on a report of a shoplifter at Sears. Staff at the store claimed a man had concealed a shirt when leaving the fitting room valued at $25. Police issued a criminal complaint against the alleged shoplifter.

Sunday, March 23

At 4:27 p.m., police arrested Maria Ramirez, 48, of Roslindale for larceny of more than $250 after responding to Sears on a report of a shoplifter. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the store's staff, who claimed Ramirez had placed several articles of clothing valuing at about $263.98 into shopping bags she'd brought into the store. Ramirez had no documents to identify herself. 

Monday, March 24

At 5:11 a.m., police received a report that a stray dog was seen on the ramp to the East Street Rotary. Police located the dog, which had no tags, and found the naiml to be a friendly white husky. The dog was transported to MSPCA-Angell.
