Police Identify Norwood Train Victim as 30-year-old Dedham Man

Transit police still don't know why the 30-year-old man was on the tracks Saturday night.

A 30-year-old Dedham man was struck and killed by an outbound commuter train Saturday night in Norwood, MBTA police confirmed Tuesday morning.

MBTA police said 30-year-old James Harty, of Dedham, was struck at 9:50 p.m. approximately 50 yards east of the Norwood Central Station on the Franklin/Forge Park Commuter Rail line.

Norwood Police received a call from an unidentified person at 10:03 p.m. Saturday night that a person may have been hit by the train. Town officers responded as well as Massachusetts State Police and Transit Police, who became the primary investigative agency.

At around 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning  there was a fatality on the tracks. Officers on the scene stated that the 9:20 p.m. southbound train out of Boston received an inner warning signal that the train may have hit someone or something. The train was stopped and MBTA workers stepped out to find the victim on the tracks. Passengers on the train were not allowed to get off while the investigation was underway.

Spokesman for the MBTA Joe Pesaturo said that it remains unclear why the man was on the tracks. Transit police continue to investigate.
