Dedham Man Dies After Involvement in Waltham Crash

The crash remains under investigation by the Middlesex County DA's office.

A 72-year-old Dedham man has passed away after being involved in a car crash in Waltham last week.

Irving Vogel died early Thursday morning at Newton Wellesley Hospital, according to Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Cara O’Brien.

 when a Waltham man allegedly drove into the medical transport van Vogel was riding in on Saturday, May 28, according to Waltham Police reports.

Vogel was on his way to the hospital when the crash occurred, O'Brien said. 

O’Brien did not say whether Vogel died as a result of his injuries. Whether upgraded charges will be filed in connection with his death is under investigation by the DA’s office, she said.

No charges have been filed in connection with Vogel’s death, but charges related to the crash itself have been filed.

Ray Alvarez, 23, of 88 Alder Ave., Waltham,  at Waltham District Court with driving under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury, speeding, leaving the scene of serious personal injury, assault and battery on a police officer, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.

Alvarez was held on $2,500 cash bail and $25,000 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on June 20.

Alvarez was allegedly drunk when he drove into the van next to 303 Newton St. in Waltham at around 6:20 p.m., according to police reports.
